I’ve never gone to counseling before. What should I expect?
Asking for help is courageous but can feel pretty scary. Most things that are new and unknown are. However, it can feel empowering to take the first step towards change. Each individual is unique so their experiences can vary. You can expect me to provide a warm and engaging environment. I encourage open communication and respect. It will be difficult at times but with hard work and commitment we can strive to reach your goals.
What is the difference between talking to a friend and working with a therapist?
A mental health professional can help you approach things in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself and others. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential and allows you to get the support you need without the fear of placing burden onto someone else.
How long will I be in therapy?
Because everyone’s circumstances are unique the length of time in counseling can vary greatly. It takes time to change patterns and behaviors we have been using our entire lives. Also, as one goal is accomplished new goals may come to light. Through open communication, I will check in with you often during sessions to discuss progress and assess our goals. Together we will determine the length of therapy.
What if I want to go to couples therapy but my partner does not?
This is very common. There are a few different options for you. The best start is coming in for a free consultation to discuss what you are looking for in more detail. This can be done individually or as a couple. Sometimes, if you are ready and your partner is not, starting individual therapy can be a good first step. If at a later date your partner is ready we can work together to determine the best next steps.
How do I know if a therapist is a good fit?
This is a very important question. Fit is everything when it comes to therapy, this includes communication style, atmosphere, therapy focus, etc. To help determine this, I offer a free 15 minute consultation to not only hear what you are looking for but also to allow you the opportunity to get to know me and how I feel I can help.
